The use of bedside ultrasound in medical consultation has slowly but surely been moving from hospital to primary care over the last 20 years.
This is in tandem with machines getting smaller, yet having better resolution. Bedside ultrasound improves patient care as it can give real-time information to doctors and shorten the investigation times needed to make a decision.
Ultrasound is touted as the " Visual Stethoscope" and can be more sensitive than X-rays, and faster than MRI scans in many applicable scenarios. Artificial intelligence has also helped doctors acquire and interpret images quicker than ever.
The ultrasound examination is superior to X-rays and CT scans in some instances as they are non-invasive, do not emit ionising radiation, and capture soft tissue details better.
